Boomlala, my dutch teacher has said to me that persons that use fancy words are often dumber then they appear. They try to impress others with their words, but in the meantime, they fail. Nobody likes it when people use words others cannot understand. ^_^

Appeal to authority. Nobody cares about your Dutch teacher. My innate sense of linguistics shan't be interfered by such populist claims. Scientific vernacular often includes sesquipedalian (I read Horace) speech due to their Latin/Greek roots, and since the (partial) meaning can usually be deciphered from a scientific term, one, if adequately educated, can quickly remember the exact definition of said term, allowing for not only an impressive flair in one's speech, but an easy mental inventory of these terms.
