I agree, posting old signatures is lazy, but that's also the result when people are busy. 
And a challenge, is fine, instead of picking a theme, you could always pick a good challenging render, or a really random theme like, 'sci-fi'. It's generic, yet very broad at the same time allowing different creative entries.
