I waited so long for this. Seems like we won't be playing with Shepard after all.

Mass Effect is a trilogy...and your characters carry over from game-to-game.

Yeah, I heard that your able to carry over your savegames too. Could be possible he dies at the end or that he is assumed dead. I dunno, we'll just have to wait.

Sounds like Baldur's Gate.

If you still have the save file where you saved Ashley, she's sure to return in ME2. If you saved Kaidan, he'll probably re-appear.

Enlighten me: can you walk around freely in that city? Is this like Oblivion (shallowly)?

Well, you travel between planets, and when you get there you can pretty much go wherever you want. Except for most story related planets. Just to give you an idea of the gameplay:
