Raschu's JK2 Sound Editing Guide
Raschu's JK2 Sounds Tutorial.
Hello and welcome at Raschu’s JK2 Sound Tutorial. In this tut you can learn how to put (your own) soundfiles with your new skin.
First of all we need:
Packscape: http://files.filefront.com/PakScape+v+011/;854339;/fileinfo.html
Music Editor (When adding a costume sound): http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/
OK Good Ready set Go!
For this tutorial I’m going to edit a kyle sound file because, wel, shouldn’t kyle actualy be a Linkin Park Fan? I made a new kyle skin and named LP_Kyle.
Of course a real Linkin Park skin has a LP taunt. So we need to edit this in the Soundfiles of Kyle.
First we open Assets1.pk3 in Packscape (this file is located in your JK2 Base folder).
Klick on the map Sounds --> Chars --> Kyle
Now you will find a load of sound files with numbers in it. Ignore them.
Copie the map named ‘Misc’ to a suiteble place, for example the base folder at your desktop or just your desktop.
Klick on the map.
You will find these files.
The file that is used for the ingame taunt is the file just named ‘taunt’ so NOT ‘taunt1’ I sugest klicking in the other sounds to hear what they are for the ingame sounds.
Ok we are going to edit the ‘taunt’ sound, start up Audacity (or any other sound edit program).
First I’m opening the song ‘What I’ve done’ into Audacity. I search the part I wana hear playing when I taunt ingame, be sure to not make this part to long.
(use fade out to let it sound more smooth)
Ok after this we need to make sure our sound is MONO otherwise it won’t work in JK2.
So, Click on the title of your sound file (linkin_park in this case) and select ‘stereo spoor splitsen’ then after that klick on the same thing and select ‘Mono’. After that you will have two channels for your song, delete one.
Now that’s done save the file in the ‘Misc’ map and call it ‘taunt’. (there will be no trouble since Audacity saves it as wave file).
Now go back to your map called ‘Misc’ and delete the MP3 version (the original taunt) of ‘taunt’ so that only your Wave file has that name.
Ok now take a deep breath, you are almost done =P
Go to your skin map, for this example it is LP_Kyle. Search for the file called ‘sounds.cfg’ ( I just noticed that the kyle map doesn’t has such file so please take one from the reborn skin.).
Open this file in WordPad.
You will see this:
The ‘reborn’ stands for wich mapname the soundfiles should come from. The ‘m’ indicates wich sex your character has. For example the reborn’s sounds.cfg file will have a ‘m’ but Jans or Tavions sound.cfg file will have a ‘f’.
Now we need to rename ‘reborn’ to the name of our skin (just like renaming while skinning) for this example it will be LP_kyle.
Okay, got it till this far?
Now we need to make the right path of maps. Open packscape (create a new file if your skin doesn’t has a PK3 yet.) and open your skin’s PK3. I already made mine and called it LP_kyle.
Now make new map and name it ‘Sound’ (this map should be located right next to the ‘Models’ map in the PK3.) klick on the map and add a new map. Name the map ‘Chars’. Click on the map and (just like skinning) give it the same name you used at the sound.cfg file. In this case I name the map LP_Kyle. Now klick on the map and drag or copie your map ‘Misc’ (you the one with your edited taunt file) to the map that you just named after your skin (LP_kyle in this case.).
Now save your skin and you are done.
If you only want to use soundfiles from another skin, for example: giving kyle the taunt of Desan. You only have to copie the taunt file of Desan into the ‘Misc’ map of your new skin and let the copie overwrite it. Then proceed with the sound.cfg and PK3 saving part of this tutorial.
Good luck and may the force be with you!
