Re: Merry Christmas!
Everyone knows why Christians celebrate Christmas, but I really think Jesus wasn't born during this particular time..
Since there are no reliable records concerning Jesus's childhood how could anyone know about his birthday. Especially when over 2000 years have passed after it.
But Merry Christmas anyway.

I consider Christmas a holiday to celebrate our family and friends. In my opinion the so called Jesus never existed. Same goes for god, god is a thing used to answer questions some may find unexplainable, this is how I think of it. I just don't see the need to think there is a god anymore. Science and Sense ftw.
By all means believe in what you want, I'm just saying I don't. I said it to the priest during my confirmation, so I'm not part of the church.
As I said, to me Christmas is all about taking care of those you have close too you. Presents doesn't mean a thing to me.

Re: Merry Christmas!
Jesus has existed. He's been proven to be a historical character who has lived in that particular area during those times.
What can't be said as a fact is all that son-of-God stuff. All I believe is that no religions can be proven to be true.
But I also believe that no religion can be proven to be false.
I'd call myself an agnostic.

Re: Merry Christmas!
Strange that no REAL and not one among the great historians living at that time has documented his existence, strange isn't it.

Re: Merry Christmas!
Xav, I've read a Latin government document about 'a Jew prophet named Jesus, who was called Christus by his followers', and who was seen as a threat to the political stability. This document was written by Pliny the Younger to the Emperor of Rome (I forgot which one, I think Trajanus).
In this document he tells about christianity, which he perceives as a jew cult (which it theoretically is), and asks the Emperor of Rome how he should persecute and punish them.
So Xav, mind doing your research before you state such sensitive comments.

Re: Merry Christmas!
I just handed you the fact that there was 'a Jew prophet named Jesus, who was called Christus by his followers', and you still defy that he existed?
Re: Merry Christmas!
Jesus didn't have any powers; those were invented (and changed) during the writing of the bibble by the romans, who just wanted a religion for their ppl. Before that there were tons of texts about this 'Jesus of Nazareth' dude. And they all said diffrent stuff. those texts were written moslty after Jesus' death by the new Jews (later called christians). They were kinda lost after the murder on Jesus so they spread out over the world. Lots ended up in Rome, where they were killed at first. But their new religion had a lot of Roman followers too and it became rly popular. Rome was in crisis at that time and Constantine tried to fix it by making Christianity the new official religion. That's when they wrote the bibble.
Few texts were taken, changed and the rest got burned. they took amongst others stuff from the 4 evangelists (whom were all born several years after Jesus' death) and changed them a bit so that they all say pretty much the same. Most of the other texts got destroyed. Some survived and were found (such as the Death Sea Scrolls). Those texts can give a better image of who Jesus realy was, since they were written by people who heard it from other people (who heard it from people, etc.) who might have actualy seen Jesus
Weird how so much wars have gone over that book .

Re: Merry Christmas!
Indeed. Christus is a title and means the anointed one. I don't see that as a proof of Jesus.
Its all astrology and based on the Egyptian religion.
One would think that, that a man who died, resurrected, performed miracles for all eyes would be mentioned vastly in the historical record.

Re: Merry Christmas!
I never stated he was the Son of God or anything, I only said there is proof that Jezus existed. Also...
There were hundreds of these so-called son of gods and prophets all around the mediterranean sea. The historians of that time (Romans and Greek people, mostly) worked for the Emperor of Rome, and since 'history' in those ages meant praising the empire in one way or another, no (or not many) time was spent on the rather normal and uninteresting phenomenon of 'prophets'.
Pliny the Younger is the oldest documentator of Christians I believe, in a letter to Emperor Trajanus.

Re: Merry Christmas!
Jesus was considered a prophet, no-one can tell scientifically about his magic powers, though.
He was also a miracle-maker. But those miracles weren't necessarily that magical. If you give it a thought, it didn't require much those days for a deed to be seen as miraclous.
What made him so special was that he was Jewish, culture in which miracle-makers weren't that common. However, it wasn't that strange in other cultures so it was rather typical for that time.
It's pointless to try to prove/disprove Jesus's miracles, that can't be done. I think religion escapes the definitions and attempts of proving.
You either believe in it or then you don't. Simple as that.

Re: Merry Christmas!
If you would need proof to believe in something, you don't believe in it. In my opinion.

Re: Merry Christmas!
I haven't been to church in 3 years.
Besides, God doesn't like me. At my baptism (the one around 12 years) I fainted in church. In front of a crowd. Most 'fail' moment of my life.

Re: Merry Christmas!
It wasn't because of the crowd or anything. But the priest did this incense-thing (it spread incense throughout the church while he was shaking that cup) and combine that with the fact that I had a cold (less breathing possibilities) and was quite sick, I fainted.
And that's why I look half-dead on my baptism-photo.
